PROJECT 1

Analyzing spatial poetics & spatial typologies in architecture

The main aim of Project 1 was to introduce different spatial typologies in architecture, and how they inform spatial use and experience through precedent studies. Working in groups, you are to analyze and compare 2 selected architectural precedents. The analysis of the design approaches will inform the preceding design projects for the remaining semester.

We were to select 2 precedents for analysis. It could be local, national and/or international examples. One precedent must be PRE-MODERN MOVEMENT, and one precedent must be CONTEMPORARY.

PRECEDENT STUDIES

 PROJECT 1A

 PROJECT 1B

Journey of the five senses

This project explores spatial typologies and poetics through the design of a simple space within a hypothetical site..

GENIUS LOCI: SITE ANALYSIS AND DESIGN CONCEPT

PROJECT 2

Site analysis and genius loci

this project required an analysis of the site context as a starting point. It is a fundamental need for any design project as it will suggest a series of parameters to suggest architectural solution, one that will be appropriate to the place and its meaning, and contributes to its context. The site needs to be understood, in both intuitive and personal ways, as well as quantitative and measured means. Techniques to record and understand the site are varied, from physical surveys to qualitative aspects of experience and personal interpretation of the place

 PROJECT 2A

 PROJECT 2B

Site response & design concept

The main aim of Project 2b is to develop a strong, individual design concept grounded in a personal site response derived from the information gathered in groups via Assignment 2a

Individually we were to produce our personal interpretation of the site in the form of sketches. The personal interpretations of the overall character of the site will inform subsequent design decisions, and it is important to record these honestly and immediately.

DESIGNING A VISITOR INTERPRETIVE CENTRE

PROJECT 2

Project 3 explores architectural response within the context of the site and programmatic requirements of interpretive centre. The purpose is to showcase interpretive material related to the context/place. The project should apply the knowledge gained from Project 1 and 2, particularly organizing and articulating spaces and the sensuality and poetics of space to inform user’s experiences within the architecture. Emphasis is given to design resolution integrating site, program and spatial poetics
