PROJECT 1

The Preliminary Studies is a preparatory assignment that focuses on investigating basic notions of the city, and learning from examples of urban infill market-places around the world. This assignment aimed to firstly introduce us to the basics in urban design and its relation to architecture, and

secondly, studying and determining the programmatic function, societal role and spatial layout of a

market-place and architectural responses for urban infills.

The Preliminary Studies comprises of three components: Site Documentation, Site Analysis, and

Precedent Studies of Urban Infills and Market-Places. The Site Documentation and Site Analysis

equiped us with a firm understanding of the site we were working with this semester, while the

Precedent Studies provided an insight into architectural responses for designing an urban infill

contemporary market-place.

The outcome of the Preliminary Studies will include the production of site documentation materials

(drawings and models in both digital and physical copy for further use), a comprehensive analysis of

the site, and a detailed case study of a relevant urban infill and market-place.

PROJECT 2

This project calls for a design of a simple public building with some complexity that includes the complexity of site topography and vegetation, socio-cultural events, and variety of strategies for sustainable design. It explores design solution that harness environmental qualities and conditions for human and environment sustainability through a project with a specific community of users.

Students explore design solutions that reduce environmental impact utilizing clustered spatial typology and fossil fuel related energy. The design work should contribute to and merge harmoniously with nature and the site, and provide the best of experiences for the users.
